Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB)

ProBuildersNet is a Free Online Community Network for the Nigerian Professional Builders. Though similar to YouTube, FaceBook and MySpace, but ProBuildersNet is professional membership focused & based. This ProBuildersNet Network Community is aimed at producing FORUMS where the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) members (RBldr, FNIOB, MNIOB, GNIOB, ANIOB, TNIOB, Students, etc.) can easily interact and share ideas, challenges and successes at any time of the day (no matter where they may reside all over the world) through internet. For example, any member can post C.V./ resume, job openings, articles, events, chat on the net, blog, post free ads, photos, music, videos, articles, invitations, wishes, questions, answers, etc, etc. - all for free! Currently, the public can freely browse through this website and patronize ProBuildersNet members, but its membership is open to the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) members and Building Students only. Membership is Free! Free!! F-R-E-E!!!  

A BUILDER
Question: Who is a Builder? Answer: A Builder is an academically trained specialist and statutorily registered professional responsible for Building Production Management, Construction and Maintenance of Buildings for the use and protection of mankind and his assets. ESTABLISHMENT 
In 1967 some thoughtful and caring Nigerian overseas-trained professional builders organized themselves into a professional association which later became the first overseas centre of the Institute of Building (Later known as The Chartered Institute of Building), United Kingdom. The Nigerian Centre of the Institute of Building became autonomous on November 5, 1970 and from then acquired the name "The Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB)". NIOB is a professional institute in Nigeria for persons engaged in Building practice in a managerial, technical or administrative capacity in the development, construction and maintenance of buildings, including those who are engaged in academic research and teaching. NIOB is also the professional home for today's managers in construction in Nigeria. It was recognized through the promulgation of Decree 45 of 1989 (now known as the ACT CAP 40 of the Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria of 1990).

OUR VISION
To provide Nigeria with the profession that will be responsible for the complete construction of new buildings, maintenance of existing buildings and Building Production Management, utilizing high standard of practice and providing modern and appropriate construction techniques, with more emphasis on improved training, safety, quality and value management for the benefit of our fatherland.

OBJECTIVES
The Objectives of the Institute are:

  • to promote the science and practice of Building;
  • to maintain competency and standard of practice of the Building profession;
  • to promote and advance the status and interest of the profession of Builders;
  • to improve and advance education and research in Building;
  • to conduct examinations of proficiency in the science and practice of Building;
  • to grant or issue certificates to members in recognition of their proficiency in Building practice;
  • to secure the unanimity of action for all its members; and
  • to promote and encourage uniformity in the custom and practice in the building and engineering construction industry,
  • to promote just and honourable practices in the conduct of businesses, and to prohibit and penalise malpractices.

BUILDER'S CODE OF ETHICS

Fundamental Principles
Builders uphold and advance the integrity, honour and dignity of the Building profession by:

  • Using their knowledge and skill for the enhancement of being honest and impartial and serving
    human welfare and environment:
  • Being honest and impartial and serving with fidelity the public, their employers and clients;
  • Striving to increase the competence and prestige of the building profession; and
  • Supporting the professional and technical societies of their disciplines.

Fundamental Canons 

  • Builders shall hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of the public and shall strive to
    comply with the principles of sustainable development in the performance of their professional duties.
  • Builders shall Perform services only in areas of their competence.
  • Builders shall issue public statements only in objective and truthful manner.
  • Builders shall act in professional matters for each employer or client as faithful agents or
     trustees, and shall avoid conflicts of  interest.
  • Builders shall build their professional reputation on the merit of their services and shall not compete
    unfairly with others.
  • Builders shall act in such a manner as to uphold and enhance the honour, integrity and dignity of
     the building profession
  • Builders shall continue their professional development throughout their careers, and shall provide
    opportunities for the professional development of those builders under their supervision.

MEMBERSHIP
The membership of NIOB includes clients, consultants and contractors who have gotten approved formal built environment education and knowledge, as well as specialists in regulation, research and education. This provides a pool of specialist knowledge which informs the way in which the industry develops.  It is also the leading institute for building and construction professionals, acknowledged for its ability to bring individuals together who share a common interest in improving the standing of the building profession and their career within Nigeria and overseas.
